To mark the start of 2012, SeeSAW has scheduled Savannah artist and former SCAD professor Katherine Sandoz to create and execute the inaugural painting at 34th and Habersham. Featuring an abstract landscape of our cherished coastal landscape, the wall being painted marks a first for the year and for public art in Savannah. Property owner Alex Grikitis graciously offers his property for Savannah artists’ use stating, “ Something like this [SeeSAW] is a big step for Savannah. Wall art and murals are an important part of history…and we are happy to lend our resources to help…”In order to help raise the initial capital of the mural program SeeSAW is conducting a fundraiser on Kickstarter dot com, an ideal format to create awareness for SeeSAW because of the website’s impeccable reputation of providing a global platform to fund creative projects. “Our goal of raising $5,000 will go towards the costs of materials and artist compensation, “ says co-founder James Zdaniewski. For information on how to fund this project click here.Created in 2011, SeeSAW organizes, coordinates and funds positive, Savannah-centric themed murals in the public domain. SeeSAW actively seeks artists, neighborhoods and property owners willing to work together with responsible process in order to foster an environment where public art thrives and promotes a sense of pride and civic unity. SeeSAW has formed a partnership with the Creative Coast to develop a lecture series that will coincide with the completion of each mural. The lecture series falls in line with the Creative Coast’s vision of, “transforming Savannah into a vibrant hub for creative and innovative businesses, organizations, and individuals.”SeeSAW co-founders James Zdaniewski and Matt Hebermehl acknowledge the unique position of Savannah’s cultural, economical and geographical landscape. Consistently one of the busiest ports on the American east coast, Savannah boasts the largest registered urban historical landmark district in the country, and hosts one of the largest and most distinguished art schools in the world, SCAD. These three facets result in an environment that attracts international commerce, tourism, and cultural exchange. traditions. Given the wealth of cultural, historical and educational assets, Savannah sees a burgeoning population of artists, artisans, and craftspeople dedicated to supporting and ameliorating the community’s strengths and traditions.
